Meta Focus

Meta wanted to show Android developers how easy it was to design apps for Quest using their new Spatial SDK. So, we made developing ideas… the idea.

The Challenge

Building a tutorial app which doesn’t function like a tutorial app

With early access to Meta’s Spatial SDK, we had an opportunity to demonstrate to developers what this baby could do. But, as our app would be launched publicly at Meta Connect 2024, we also had to design something which would add value for end users eager for new Quest content. That’s when we realised that whether you’re developing apps or just trying to finish off your next presentation, we could all use a little help focusing...

The Project

A spatial brainstorming tool that opens up new ways of working

We created ‘Focus,’ an app which used the best of Meta’s Spatial SDK functionality to immerse users in a customisable virtual space where they could simultaneously brainstorm new ideas, prioritise tasks and map out projects through to completion. With a selection of different VR environments to choose from and a host of interactive features, from Post-its and arrows through to web navigation and a GenAI assistant, Focus became the perfect platform to bring your work to life.

The app was accompanied by a dedicated documentation hub for developers, allowing them to understand how we had built each element and teaching them the different skills they would need to maximise the Spatial SDK. So, if you wanted to find out how to spawn objects relative to a user’s position, create interactions with spatial objects or store multiple room configurations, our guidelines had you covered.

The Results

Expanding the Quest universe

Focus was chosen to be one of just three sample apps that were used to promote the Spatial SDK at Meta Connect 2024 and was featured by Meta in all of their event comms and content. By engaging developers with a live app rather than a press release, we were able to demonstrate the platform’s practical features through real scenarios and make the learning experience far more interactive. At the same time, existing Quest users could use the app to boost their productivity and transform their approach to work.

By keeping both audiences happy and engaged, we helped Meta to land a key platform milestone whilst ushering in a new era of spatial development.

And to top it all off, our very own Ana Pereyra (Sr. Creative Developer) and Paloma Oribe (Creative Director) were invited by Meta to share firsthand what it was like to work with the Spatial SDK to bring Focus to life. From pushing its capabilities to tackling creative and technical challenges, they broke it all down at Meta Connect 2024.
